GENOME PROJECTS

Genome Project refers to initiatives for Genomic Sequencing and Expressed Sequence Tag analysis. Over 5000 of these projects are publicly known and nearly 900 completed Genome Sequences have been reported among which nearly 100 of eukaryal origin.

A small number of higher plant genomes have been finished and published: the model plants thale cress (Arabidopsis thaliana) and clover (Medicago truncatula) as well as the crop species rice (Oryza sativa), grape (Vitis vinifera) and the woody plant poplar (Populus balsamifera trichocarpa) for the study of future concepts of carbon sequestration.

In addition, Genome Sequence data for crop species like maize (Zea mais), rapeseed (Brassica napus), soybean (Glycine max), barley (Hordeum vulgare), coffee (Coffea arabica), orange (Citrus sinensis), apple (Malus domesticus), cucumber (Cucumis sativus) and several Solanum species such as tomato, potato and coffee are in finishing stages.
